13th Jul 2012 - 15th Jul 2012 Oggie Rally, Plymouth

Soggy oggie oggie… Oi, oi, oi! Chris Monk, Plymouth Chapter’s Assistant Director reports on the second Oggie Rally held July 13-15.

As with many rallies and events this year it’s been a struggle to attract commitment from rally goers because of the very wet summer, and the Oggie Rally was no exception.

On Thursday, a dedicated team gathered at our venue, Plymouth Parkway Sports and Social Club. The rain and wind tried its best to drown our enthusiasm and efforts, but to no avail. With true Devon and Cornish spirit the team set about erecting the marquees for the Chapter Kitchen in what seemed like a field of mud. We had intended to use the field for all activities, including traders and bike parking but had to resort to our contingency plan: mobile homes and caravans used the firm ground by Rally HQ, traders headed into the main club car park and the field was for camping only. On Thursday evening, finding a pitch for my tent that was not submerged was no easy task.

Friday arrived, the rain stopped and, thanks to good drainage, the water on the field began to disappear. The traders set up and we just hoped and prayed that everyone who had bought tickets wouldn’t be put off. Midday came and they started to arrive in dribs and drabs – but at least they came. There were members from Thames Valley, Bridgewater, Great Western, Hogsback and our twinned Chapter, Cornouaille, Quimper and many others. Geoff Crocker worked hard bringing in tents, luggage and people in his shooting buggy – the only vehicle allowed on the grass.

Friday night was the 'night of nights'; we were greeted by the smiling, helpful staff at the clubhouse. Entertainment for the evening kicked off with our chapter DJ Sumo followed by amazing music from two bands – The Jack and Metal Fatigue – who worked together to blow everybody away with their music.

Saturday was ride-out day with the sun breaking through the clouds; the views from the rally site were amazing: in the foreground the River Tamar rolled out to a panoramic view across Cornwall. Our Head Road Captain Derek Mills and his assistant Alex Thomas, lead two ride-outs taking in the sights in and around the villages of Devon and Cornwall – narrowly missing the showers!

Our entertainment that evening was again hosted by DJ Sumo and the band Eclipse, who managed to get everyone up and dancing the night away – we even had some line dancing! It was a little more subdued than the night before as we all knew Sunday was departure day, but at least when we woke up the next day the sun was out at last!

The weekend passed without major incident and we hope everyone enjoyed themselves.

Thank you to everyone who came and made the weekend special and a really big thank you to the special people who without their commitment none of this would have been possible, Ricky Chubb, Mad Mark Wilson, Geoff Crocker, Derek Woods, Bridget Smale, the list goes on - you know who you are, you all worked hard together as a team.
